    Dr. La-Toya Gaines, PsyD

I’m a fully licensed African American female therapist with a PsyD in Clinical Psychology from the Michigan School of Professional Psychology. My past experience as a core faculty member teaching psychology at my alma mater and adjunct faculty at Oakland Community College has helped create a foundation for my professional knowledge. My current experience as a clinician and clinical supervisor to others helps to keep my clinical expertise sharp and up to date.

What’s more, I have more than a decade of experience working specifically with families like yours. While these experiences give me an intricate understanding of how best to help families and adolescents live happier and healthier lives through therapy, it’s my own family that grounds me, pushing me to go above and beyond for my patients. I have been married for over 18 years and have two children, one entering young adulthood, the other a teenager.

We are more than just a family psychologists

At Family Matters Counseling, we work with a team of highly experienced therapists to help you take control of your life. We provide counseling for depression, anxiety disorders, and other mental health problems. We strive to promote resilience and recovery through relationship support, cognitive behavior therapy, and creativity techniques. Our therapists are also experienced in supporting people who have experienced trauma or abuse.

We are ready to help you and your family.
    You Deserve Honesty and Transparency

There are no tricks or games here. Therapy doesn’t have to be some mysterious process, where you don’t know what’s going to happen next. Instead, let’s all follow the same roadmap for how we’re going to meet your goals.

    Band-Aids Don’t Solve Problems

Working toward a solution everyone can agree upon while developing life-long skills and tools to tackle future issues, does. Whatever has you seeking a family therapist, you’ll leave each session with practical skills you can use to build a healthy, happy family together.

    Your Family Is a Team

Perhaps your team isn’t functioning at its best right now, but that doesn’t make one family member any less important than another. Let’s get everyone on board and working together. We’ll reach them that much more quickly.

    Your Time is Important

Between work, family, caring for your home, and what little relaxation time you have, you simply don’t need the stress of canceled appointments or sessions that don’t start and end on time. I will do my best to stay on schedule every single time.

    Therapy is Hard Work

Working toward a better life isn’t always simple. Making time for sessions and working through painful memories is hard. If it were easy, you’d do it at home in your spare time.  That’s why we are here to guide you through the hard parts and keep you motivated.
