Embracing Sisterhood at the Black Girl Picnic Detroit: A Reflection on Community and Self-Care
This past weekend, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Black Girl Picnic Detroit at Belle Isle. This event has become a cornerstone for celebrating the beauty, authenticity, and resilience of Black women, and it was an experience that left a lasting impact on both me and my daughter, Ken. Attending the Black Girl Picnic with her was a powerful reminder of the importance of sisterhood and the deep connections that unite us as Black women.
The Power of Sisterhood at the Black Girl Picnic
The Black Girl Picnic is more than just a gathering—it’s a vibrant celebration of sisterhood, empowerment, and community. Being surrounded by so many beautiful Black women, all gathered with a shared purpose, was incredibly inspiring. For Ken, it was an opportunity to witness the importance of community among Black women—a community that uplifts, supports, and empowers.
As a mother, one of my greatest hopes is that Ken will cultivate her own community of sisterhood as she enters adulthood. I want her to experience the same sense of belonging and support that I felt at the picnic. This event served as a potent reminder that, as Black women, we thrive when we have spaces where we can be our authentic selves, free from judgment and filled with love.
Connecting with Black Women Through Mental Health and Self-Care
As a licensed clinical psychologist and founder of Family Matters Counseling in Detroit, I had the honor of being a sponsor at the Black Girl Picnic. Setting up my tent allowed me to connect with so many incredible women who were eager to learn more about mental health, self-care, and the unique challenges faced by Strong Black Women.
One of the highlights of the day was introducing women to my 7-week self-care journal designed explicitly for Strong Black Women. This journal is a tool that encourages reflection, self-compassion, and the prioritization of mental and emotional well-being. Many women who visited my tent shared their personal struggles with balancing the expectation of constant strength with their own need for self-care. These conversations reaffirmed my mission: to help Black women shed the burden of always being strong and to embrace vulnerability as a form of true strength.
Seeing women excited to start their self-care journeys with my journal was incredibly fulfilling. Moments like these drive my passion for mental health and motivate me to continue creating resources that support the well-being of Black women.
The Importance of Community and Self-Care for Black Women
The Black Girl Picnic was more than just an event; it was a powerful reminder of the importance of self-care, community, and mental health for Black women. At the end of the day, Ken and I reflected on the deep sense of connection and empowerment we both felt. I am grateful for the community of women who welcomed us with open arms, for the meaningful conversations we shared, and for the opportunity to bond with my daughter in such a profound way.
As a psychologist specializing in the mental health of Black women, I remain committed to creating spaces where we can come together, support one another, and prioritize our well-being. The Black Girl Picnic Detroit was a beautiful reminder that we are stronger together, and I am honored to be part of such a vibrant and empowering community.
